Less than two years ago, the New York Giants signed Daniel Jones to a huge, $160 million extension to make him their franchise quarterback for a few years long. Needless to say, that contract has backfired hilariously.
Jones was benched earlier this week after poor play hurt the Giants en route to a 2-8 start. Now, the team has further humiliated him by assigning him practice responsibilities unbecoming of a quarterback making $40 million this year.
Daniel Jones was demoted all the way to third, and possibly fourth, string, as Tommy DeVito will start. His contract, which has two void years at the end, would become guaranteed next year with an injury. So, it makes sense to make sure that he never plays another snap for them again, hence the demotion all the way down the depth chart.
NFL rosters are small, however, and it’s often all hands on deck during the practice week in terms of filling out the scout team. Oftentimes, players will have to play other positions during the week for the scout team for walkthroughs, even if they’re not playing them in live periods during practice.
Welcome to the scout team, Daniel Jones. But, he wasn’t playing quarterback. Rather, they put him on defense. Jones filled in at safety during periods of the team’s practice on Thursday ahead of their game against the Buccaneers on Sunday.
Folks, it doesn’t get much lower than this for an NFL quarterback. Daniel Jones thought he was going to be the answer in New York for a long time after signing the extension. Now, he’s basically a practice dummy filling random roles on the scout team.
Jones will almost certainly be released this offseason. I do think there will be a market for him as a high-end backup. But, for now, he’s in quite the embarrassing situation.
