HBO’s Hard Knocks franchise continues to expand as the latest iteration of the series — Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants — premiered on MAX on Tuesday, July 2.
According to HBO and the NFL, Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants will “follow the team’s every move as general manager Joe Schoen and the front office navigate the critical offseason period — from the NFL Scouting Combine and free agency to the NFL Draft and team minicamps.”
The first episode of the series, which will run from July 2 to July 30 (which is when NFL training camps and therefore the original Hard Knocks series, which will focus on the Chicago Bears), captured Schoen in the early stages of the NFL offseason, doing things such as going down to Alabama for the 2024 Senior Bowl, trading for linebacker Brian Burns, and unsuccessfully negotiating with Saquon Barkley.
One moment in the episode that will likely have a majority of Giants fans tearing their hair out, however, is when Schoen expressed belief in maligned quarterback Daniel Jones, who he compared to Patrick Mahomes by saying that even the three-time Super Bowl champion “couldn’t win” behind the team’s offensive line.
“The reality is, facts: three serious injuries in two years,” Schoen says. “We need to protect ourselves. He [Jones] didn’t have much of a chance last year. That’s legit. In the offseason, the four guys, your core guys that are going to play together have played less than 60 snaps together. Nobody could… you could have Pat Mahomes, he can’t f—— win behind that.”

The Giants drafted Jones out of Duke University with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Jones has been the franchise’s starting QB ever since, with his best season coming in 2022 as he led the Giants to the playoffs and posted career highs in starts, attempts, completions, passing yards, yards per pass, passer rating, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns.
