LIV golfer Graeme McDowell found himself in the midst of controversy this weekend after failing a drug test. McDowell addressed the rule-breaking in a social media post on Sunday.

He blamed a nasal spray for his violation, while also throwing a petty jab at the PGA Tour. The rivalry remains!

The golfer was suspended for one LIV Golf tournament after testing positive for a banned substance. That suspension also came along with a hefty fine of $125k.

As a result, both his personal and team performances will be disqualified from the latest LIV Nashville tournament. He’ll miss an upcoming event in West Virginia before regaining eligibility for Chicago in September.

Graeme McDowell released a statement on the incident Sunday, taking full responsibility for the violation.

That post on Instagram laid out the situation for followers, though it was a bit tamer than what was said on X.

“Ahead of LIV Nashville, I was struggling with severe congestion that was affecting my sleep. In an effort to manage it, I used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant without realizing it might be on the banned list. As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption. Unfortunately, I did not think to do this due to the over-the-counter nature of this medicine, and I deeply regret the oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.

“LIV’s anti-doping policy is designed to be thorough and transparent. Unlike some other tours, LIV enforces these rules rigorously, which made this situation particularly challenging for me. However, I respect the need for these rules and penalties – they are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport.”

In that second paragraph was a blatant shot at the PGA Tour.

Many immediately reacted online.

“A well-written statement by the Saudis.”

“They can’t even announce a failed drug test without making it a propaganda piece.”

Graeme McDowell has 18 tournament wins, four of which came on the PGA Tour. Eleven more came on the European Tour. The 2010 US Open winner joined LIV in 2022.

There still seems to be some tension between him and his former league after seeing this unnecessary dig.
