Either Ashton Jeanty or Travis Hunter Jr. is going to win the Heisman Trophy. It is a two-man race between the Colorado defensive back and wide receiver, and the Boise State running back.
The head coaches of both programs obviously believe their respective guys deserve the award.
Deion Sanders believes the Heisman race is no longer a race after the Buffaloes’ blowout win on Saturday. Hunter caught 10 passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns on offense, and set the tone for the game with an interception on Oklahoma State’s first drive.

The 21-year-old two-way star played more than 110 snaps on Friday and became the first college football player since at least 1996 (stats are hazy before that year) to record three touchdowns and a pick. More than likely, that has not happened since the early days of the forward pass— if ever.
Travis clinched the Heisman with his performance […]
You’ve never seen it before. He’s the best player in college football.
— Deion Sanders
Hunter is the overwhelming betting favorite to win the award and his head coach is very vocal with his opinion. Sanders also receives a lot of media attention by nature of who he is.
Travis Hunter proved today and he has proved every week that he is the best player in college football. You’ve got to give me another definition of the award. The award is to go to who? The best quarterback? He’s up for best offensive player, best defensive player, a plethora of things.
Who else has done that? Ever?
— Deion Sanders
On the other side of the conversation, Boise State often flies under the radar because of their conference and head coach Spencer Danielson is not nearly as boisterous as Sanders. However, he teased an upcoming Heisman push.
It sounds like the 36-year-old is going to present Jeanty’s case over the next few days and/or weeks. In the meantime, he wants to focus on one key difference between the two frontrunners— one of them is playing in his conference championship game. The other is not.
Is that enough to put one player ahead of another? Danielson took the opportunity to remind Sanders that Ashton Jeanty will play this weekend for a Mountain West Championship. Travis Hunter will watch the Big 12 Championship at home. The numbers are one thing. Wins and losses are another!
