Barry Sanderson is out as the high school basketball coach at Northridge in Alabama. He claims he was fired because of disgruntled parents.

The school has yet to explain the surprising ouster.

Regardless of the reason, the most successful high school basketball coaches in school history will not return after three seasons. It is a mystery.

Barry Sanderson made history at Northridge.

Sanderson took over as head coach at Northridge in April of 2023 after six seasons at Tuscaloosa Academy. He led his former program to a 120-36 record with two state championships and six-consecutive area championships so there was a lot of buzz about the hire. It was a big move.

Northridge High School is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Class 6A school enrolls approximately 1,200 students in Grades 9-12.

The Jaguars were not very good in the year prior to Barry Sanderson’s arrival. They finished the 2022-23 season two games below .500 at 8-10 and missed out on the playoffs all together.

Their expectation for success very quickly changed under their new head coach.

Sanderson led Northridge to a 26-6 record in Year 1, a 25-9 record in Year 2 and a 22-11 record in Year 3. He won 73 games with only 26 losses in three seasons. The Jaguars won their first Class 6A Area 6 Championship and reached the Elite Eight for the first time in program history in 2025. They returned to the area tournament final in 2026 and played their way to the sub-regional round of the 6A playoffs.

It was another solid season for a coach who knows how to win!

Why did he get fired as the high school basketball coach?

Barry Sanderson led the Northridge High School basketball program to new heights but he will not be retained for the 2026-27 season. The Jaguars chose to switch things up at head coach moving forward.

Sanderson received noticed of the decision on Thursday. Parents were informed of the move via email not too long thereafter.

Dear Basketball Parents and Families,

I am writing to update you regarding a change in leadership within our boys basketball program. We would like to thank Coach Sanderson for his time and service to Northridge High School, and we wish him well in the future.

Our administrative team will work swiftly but carefully to secure the next individual to lead the program. The position will be posted on all necessary platforms, and we will conduct a thorough search process. There is a plan in place to continue the management of basketball activities until a replacement is named.

Please note that our school will be closed next week for Spring Break, and our administrative team will be unavailable during that time. We will provide any pertinent updates once we return to campus.

Thank you for your continued support of Northridge basketball and our student-athletes. We wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable Spring Break.

Sincerely,
Dr. Williams

The ouster comes as a bit of a surprise given the upward trajectory of the program since his arrival.

According to Sanderson, the decision was made by disgruntled parents. They essentially forced the administration to fire him.

“Some parents didn’t like the direction of the program and voiced concerns to the administration. The administration decided to go in a different direction. I’m very appreciative that I got to coach and mentor great kids over my three years at Northridge.”

I don’t know whether that means the players were upset with how the head coach treated their children or if they were upset with playing time distribution. Perhaps there is more to this story. I don’t know.

Northridge has not provided any further details on why Sanderson was fired.
