Alabama High School Football Controversy Safety

Thompson survived a brief scare against Carver-Montgomery during its high school football season-opener in Alabama. The reigning state champions blew the doors wide open during the second half.

However, the final score does not reflect reality.

The Wolverines should’ve been awarded two additional points for a safety committed by the Warriors’ punter. It probably wouldn’t have made a difference in the outcome but high school football officials completely missed an obvious special teams lapse.

Thompson High School destroyed Carver-Montgomery.

Bend but don’t break was the early storyline on Thursday night in Alabaster, Ala. Both teams struggled to get into the end zone despite a few solid offensive drives.

No. 1 Thompson went into the locker room tied at six with No. 12 Carver-Montgomery after quarterback Trent Seaborn, son of former NFL defensive back Jason Seaborn, dropped a dime.

The 6-6 score did not hold for long. The Warriors came out firing on all cylinders after the break.

Seaborn and the top-ranked offense scored 31 unanswered points. Meanwhile, the defense did not allow the Wolverines to score another point.

Thompson beat Carver-Montgomery 37-6.

Was it a safety?

If we are to be completely honest, the final score was incorrect. Thompson should’ve won 37-8.

There was a play during the first half that was not properly ruled as a safety.

The Warriors’ punter lined up in his own end zone about four yards deep. His longsnapper did not get him the ball on the numbers. The snap was extremely low and bounced on the turf.

Even though the punter was able to get off a punt before the defense crashed his party, he was unable to field the ball cleanly. His right knee touched the ground while the ball was in his hand.

By rule, that is a safety. Placeholders are exempt to this rule. Punters are not.

I am not sure whether it would’ve changed anything with the final result but Wolverines should’ve been awarded two points and the ball! Alabama high school officials missed the call.
