California High School Soccer Champion Forcibly Restrained By Teammates During Red Card Crash Out

Bishop Amat defeated Newport Harbor to win another divisional championship in high school soccer. The Lancers outlasted the Sailors to claim its second-straight CIF Southern Section title.

It got heated during the second half.

Fortunately, the high school soccer officials did not spoil the championship game with a flurry of penalties. He allowed cooler heads to prevail and played on.

Bishop Amat is a high school soccer powerhouse.

Bishop Amat Memorial High School is a private co-ed Catholic high school that serves the San Gabriel Valley. It is located in La Puente, California with a total enrollment of less than 1,000 students. Newport Harbor is a public school in Orange County with a total enrollment of ~2,300 students. The two campuses are separated by approximately 45 miles.

The Lancers finished the regular season with four losses and three draws at 6-2 in conference play. The Sailors finished with three losses and two draws at 9-2-1 in conference play. They didn’t play each other.

Positioned as 1-seeds on opposite sides of the bracket, Bishop Amat and Newport Harbor met on a collision course in the CIF Southern Section Division-II Final on Saturday at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. The former ultimately defeated the latter by a score of 2-1.

Bishop opened the scoring early in the first half. Newport answered not too long thereafter. A penalty kick in the final minute of the first half gave the Lancers a lead that they would never give back.

Newport Harbor picked up a late red card.

The second half got chippy as the Sailors tried to to tie the game. Landon Baker was shown a red card during the 80th minute as the physicality increased. He was baffled by the call.

His opponent was furious. The Bishop Amat player had to be forcibly restrained by his own teammates during a complete and total meltdown. Fortunately, they were able to keep him away from Newport Harbor so the situation did not escalate. The official did not issue an additional penalty.

Newport Harbor played a man down during the last 10 minutes and could not get back on the board. Bishop Amat won its second-straight CIF-Southern Section Division 2 title.

It was their 13th-straight playoff win dating back to last season.
