ESPN Experiences Immediate Regret As Rogue Fan Commandeers Hot Mic To Interrupt Lacrosse Broadcast

The broadcast of a conference championship lacrosse matchup between Sacred Heart and Siena was briefly interrupted by a rogue fan over the weekend. The attendee made ESPN regret having the crowd mic’d up for the contest.

Those hot mics were intended to simply catch crowd noise and reaction during dramatic moments in the action. Instead, they picked up some tasteless commentary.

Both programs entered the afternoon with NCAA Tournament aspirations. Siena came into the title bout at 10-4 while Sacred Heart sat at 12-2 with a Top 20 ranking.

The Pioneers hosted as the top seed in the league tournament. They hadn’t lost a game in that home venue since February of 2024. The winning streak would come to an end on Saturday, though.

Siena jumped out to a 3-2 first quarter lead and never looked back. They’d go onto win the matchup, 12-8.

The Saints’ win wasn’t the only storyline from the matchup. One fourth quarter moment of action went particularly viral on social media.

In the final stages of the game, there was a brief on-air interruption. A fan hopped on a crowd mic to spew disrespect towards the Pioneers. “A lot of people saying Sacred Heart has diarrhea,” they said.

ESPNU broadcasters offered an immediate apology for the unexpected interruption. The damage had already been done!

Unfortunately, Sacred Heart was unable to disprove that trash talk. They were outscored in three of four quarters as the Saints flexed their muscles for the large majority of play.

With the win, Siena took home its first MAAC Championship in over a decade. They’ll soon face the University of Albany in NCAA Tournament play.
