When the Houston Texans made a blockbuster move to acquire star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills in the offseason, many believed an already explosive Houston offense would become the best in the league.
But through seven games this season, that’s been anything but the case. The Texans are scoring fewer points per game than they did a year ago. Quarterback CJ Stroud is throwing for nearly 60 fewer yards per game. And while Diggs has had a solid start to the season, it hasn’t helped the whole of the offense.
Things appeared to come to a head on Sunday and against the Green Bay Packers, and Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans doesn’t seem happy about it.
Diggs got into a pregame skirmish with Packers defensive back Jaire Alexander. Alexander then went out and locked down Diggs in the game, holding him to just five catches for 23 yards. Stroud threw for a career-low 86 yards in the game and the Packers beat the Texans, 24-22.
DeMeco Ryans And Stefon Diggs Have Differing Views On Pregame Incident
After the game, Diggs showed no remorse for the pregame altercation.
“I don’t give a f— if I’m by myself or with a million. I’m never the bigger person. I ain’t letting s— go,” he told reporters. “They picked it up or whatever. But I ain’t with the football tough guy s—.”
But Ryans didn’t agree.
“We can’t be about chirping,” he said. “Things like that happen. Those guys have a history. They’ve been going at it before. We don’t want to encourage that. We just want to go play ball the right way and make sure it’s settled on the field.”
Stroud was visibly frustrated with the stagnant Texans’ offense throughout the game. And while Houston sits at 5-2, it doesn’t appear that the offense has any sort of cohesion or chemistry.
Meanwhile, Diggs is seemingly living his best life in his new city. But Ryans may well regret messing with a team that had as good vibes as any a year ago.
