Full disclosure, I’ve been a Mets fan my whole life, third generation in fact. Us Mets fans know that what happened in the 9th inning of Thursday’s unbelievable, improbable comeback win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the deciding game of the NL Wild Card Series is something we’re always on the wrong side of. Legendary Mets broadcaster Howie Rose knows that all too well.
But, on Thursday night, Howie Rose got the opportunity to make the call of his life in his baseball broadcasting career. Like all the great do, he absolutely nailed it.
The Mets and Brewers were playing the rubber match of their three-game NL Wild Card Series in Milwaukee. After the game was scoreless through 6 1/2 innings, Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick went back-to-back to put the Brewers up 2-0. The score remained 2-0 heading to the top of the 9th, when the Mets were set to face arguably the best closer in the National League, Devin Williams.
Francisco Lindor, whose MVP-caliber season rescued the Mets after a horrific month of May, led off with a walk after a long battle with Williams. And, two batters later, Brandon Nimmo slapped a single through the right side to set up Pete Alonso with 1st and 3rd and one out.
Alonso, who is set to be a free agent at the end of the year, had a down season by his standards. But, in what could’ve been his last at-bat as a Met, he had the biggest swing of his career, setting up Howie Rose for the call of his baseball life.

The “He did it! He did it!” from Howie really, really hits.
It’s not the first all-time great call from Howie Rose. Previously, his most famous call was a hockey call. His “Matteau, Matteau, Matteau” call may be the most famous in hockey history.
The Mets closed it out in the bottom of the 9th, and Howie Rose’s call of a baseball lifetime will live on forever.
