College football’s bowl season is really starting to ramp up.

There were 5 bowl games yesterday. At least 3 will be played every day until January 2nd.

We are just 3 days away from getting to see Georgia-Ohio State and Michigan-TCU in the College Football Playoff.

With all of this currently unfolding in this year’s iteration of Bowl Season, it seems some already have their sights set on what future bowl seasons should look like.

College football fans already know that one big change to Bowl Season is on its way. It won’t be long before we get to watch an expanded Playoff.

Now it seems bowl officials are considering some more major changes to bowl season.

The executive director of college football’s Bowl Season told Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger that he believes it’s time to make changes to keep up with the drastic changes occurring across college sports.

There’s more drastic change going on in college athletics than I can ever remember and maybe ever in its history. It’s time now to shift our focus to Bowl Season and determine what role we play in the college football calendar. Everything else in college athletics is evolving, Bowl Season will evolve as well.

Included in those potential changes are making the conditions for bowl eligibility more strict and paying players to compete in bowl games instead of paying conferences.

I’m not sure how well the first change would go over as there were 19 teams with records of 6-6 or worse that were bowl eligible this season. Removing these teams from the equation would cost fans quite a few bowl games.

The second change sounds like a fantastic idea. Players should be compensated for the extra game. These games bring in plenty of extra attention for their schools and extra revenue. They should benefit from it. This might also incentivize players to compete in these games even if they are heading to the NFL Draft, giving fans higher quality games to watch.

Maybe College Football Playoff expansion won’t be the only big change coming to the sport in the near future.
