Hugh Freeze is far and away the best golfer in the SEC. However, his wonky swing will make your back hurt just by watching him on the golf course.
It is one of the ugliest swings you will ever see, and yet, somehow, it works!
Freeze, in his third year coaching college football at Auburn, is no stranger to the Regions Tradition Pro-Am. The 55-year-old used to compete in various golf tournaments when he was at Ole Miss and made his triumphant debut at the Regions earlier this week. His swing has not changed.
Multiple SEC head coaches have crowned Freeze as the best golfer of the bunch. He lists 20 scores on the USGA’s Golf Handicap Information Network for 2025, with a low score of 75 in April. You would not know that he carries a 5.9 handicap if you were to watch him on the tee. I genuinely do not know how he doesn’t have severe back pain but I guess his body has adjusted to the quirky motion throughout the years. And obviously, it works!
Freeze pulled up to Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham with a custom golf bag presented to him by the Auburn golf team. He is a member of both Moore’s Mill Golf Club and the Auburn University Club.
The awkward hitch at the top of his backswing will make you question your entire existence. How does Hugh Freeze carry such a low handicap with such a weird swing?

Some of the other college football coaches in the SEC have quirky swings. None of them are like Freeze.

It just goes to show… the old golf saying is true — just swing your swing! Here is how he compares to other amateur golfers in the field at the Regions Pro-Am:
Believe it or not, Hugh Freeze did not have the lowest handicap of the coaches in the field. Trent Dilfer has a handicap of under 2.0 but he’s not in the SEC so he doesn’t count for this article.
