Soccer can produce some truly incredible moments of theatre, on par with any sport in the world. We saw one of those truly incredible moments in the final seconds of a decisive UEFA Euro 24 Group Stage match between Hungary and Scotland on Sunday.

With both teams needing a win to keep their UEFA Euro 24 hopes alive, Hungary’s Kevin Csoboth scored a dramatic goal to keep the hopes of his nation alive just minutes after his teammate looked to suffer a serious injury.

This year’s Euros format features six  groups of four teams, with the top two from each group plus the top four-third place finishers advancing to the 16-team knockout round. Scotland came in with 1 point, while Hungary had 0 points. More or less, both teams needed to win to have any chance of advancing.

While the score remained 0-0 until nearly 100 minutes into the game, it had a lot of open play and chances. The most notable sequence of the game was a collision involving Hungarian player Barnabas Varga. Varga was down on the field for quite a while before finally being stretchered off. Thankfully, it appears he’s going to be okay after some scary moments.

The delay due to that collision and the stoppage after it gave us ten minutes of stoppage time, setting up this dramatic winner in the 100th minutes.

Hungary countered off of a Scotland corner kick, and produced a beauty.

What a moment for Hungary, who now have 3 points and at least a puncher’s chance to get out of the group stage. It’s probably not super likely that 3 points with a -3 goal differential will be good enough. But, they have a chance, unlike Scotland, who are eliminated.

This Euros continues to deliver incredible moments.
