Tennessee Volunteers centerfielder Hunter Ensley made one of the plays of the College World Series so far in a recent matchup against North Carolina. Tracking a deep fly ball towards the left-center gap, the defender somehow made the grab while crashing into the outfield wall at full speed.
He hit the fence with so much force that it left a literal mark! That catch helped the Vols advance through the winner’s bracket as they eye their first ever national title.
The grab came early on in that Vols-Heels contest, and it kept UNC from putting together a second inning scoring threat. With no one on and no one out, North Carolina’s Anthony Donofrio stepped into the batter’s box.
The lefty turned on an 0-2 pitch from Drew Beam and sent if sailing towards the centerfield wall.
Ensley trailed the blast all the way to the warning track before throwing his glove up to make a backhanded attempt on the ball. Not only was he able to secure the grab, but he maintained control after slamming into the fence.

Incredible effort.
Another angle from the outfield stands shows the impact felt upon hitting that wall with full force.

Hunter Ensley left his mark on Omaha!
If you look closely at Ensley after those replays, you’ll see just the slightest discoloration of eye black beneath the centerfielder’s right eye. That’s because some of it was left on the Charles Schwab Field wall!

The catch helped leave the bases clear in that second inning as the Vols kept UNC off the board. Tennessee would later take a 3-0 lead before going on to win, 6-1.
The Vols are now 2-0 in CWS play, and in the driver’s seat in the national championship race.
