ICE Being Blocked From Accessing City-Owned Property During California Super Bowl

It appears that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is being prevented from accessing city-owned property during the Super Bowl in Santa Clara.

Back in October, Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski blasted the NFL for choosing Bad Bunny to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show and vowed to have ICE agents in attendance at the Super Bowl in Santa Clara.

“There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else. We will find you and apprehend you and put you in a detention facility and deport you. Know that is a very real situation under this administration, which is contrary to how it used to be,” says Corey Lewandowski.

In an attempt to thwart ICE agents, the city of Santa Clara is preventing them from conducting immigration enforcement at city-owned properties.

On Tuesday evening, the Santa Clara City Council issued a statement supporting the city’s immigrant community and approved “ICE-free zones” that mirror those adopted across the Bay Area from San Jose to Alameda County.

Under the policy, federal agents would be prohibited from using city-owned properties including parking lots, garages and other open spaces as staging grounds for civil immigration enforcement. The city intends to post signage and install physical barriers around these areas. The signage will be available to businesses and other landowners who want to prevent immigration operations on their private property.

Earlier this week, NFL chief security officer Cathy Lanier insisted that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers will not be among the federal agencies present at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara during the Super Bowl.

“There are no planned ICE enforcement activities. We are confident of that,” Lanier said at a security briefing.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie believes the Super Bowl will be drama-free going forward.

“We are going to keep everybody safe — our residents, our visitors,” Lurie said. “Obviously with everything going on, we’re staying on top of it, monitoring everything. But I expect everything to be safe and fun.”
