Normal Community defeated United Township to win the Illinois Class 4A Regional Championship in high school basketball. It came down to the last second, literally.

A brilliant use of the clock allowed for the Ironmen to let time expire on the win.

Rather, it was a lack thereof. The victors refused to pick up the ball until the high school basketball game was over.

Normal Community defeated United Township by one point.

Normal Community High School is located in Normal, Illinois. It enrolls approximately 2,000 students in Grades 9-12. United Township is located in East Moline, Illinois. It enrolls approximately 1,900 students.

The two campuses are separated by 130 miles.

Although the top-seeded Ironmen finished the regular season with a better record, it was the fifth-seeded Panthers who hosted the Class 4A Regional Championship on Friday. The gym was packed.

The better team prevailed in the end. Normal Community defeated United Township by exactly one point during an instant classic to complete the six-peat.

The Panthers finished the year at 19-12 overall to go along with a 10-4, third-place finish in the conference. The 26-7 Ironmen will keep dancing. They advanced to the sectional semifinal with the win.

High school basketball clock rules are very specific.

United Township trailed Normal Community by four points with 15 seconds left to play. The home team had to go the full length of the court and it did exactly that. They broke seamlessly across half court to set up a wide-open three on the right wing. Jordan Massey knocked down the triple to cut it to one.

This is where things get interesting.

There were eight seconds left in the game but the Panthers did not have any timeouts remaining so they could not stop the clock. The Ironmen knew they couldn’t.

With that in mind, Normal Community did not pick up the loose ball as it rolled along the baseline under the hoop after the made basket for more than a few seconds. It did not possess the ball until there were less than five seconds left on the clock.

Because the ball was not possessed right away, the five-second count on the inbounds did not start. The clock ultimately expired before the offense even attempted to put the ball in play.

United Township could not do anything about it. It could not foul. It could not try and force a steal. Game over.

Assuming the clock exploitation was intentional, this is a brilliant display of strategy from the Ironmen. The players either knew what to do or their coaches told them what to do. Either way, it was extremely smart. The Panthers never got another opportunity after the three-pointer with eight seconds left.
