Khelif has been a controversial figure throughout the Olympics due to the fact that she had been previously disqualified by the International Boxing Association for failing to meet their gender eligibility requirements for the women’s competition at the 2023 World Boxing Championships.
At the time, IBA President Umar Kremlev told Russian news agency Tass that Khelif had been disqualified because it was proven she had XY chromosomes.
The International Olympic Committee disagreed with the IBA’s ruling and has allowed Khelif to compete at the Olympics.
“Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules. “They are women in their passports and it’s stated that this is the case, that they are female.”
