Indiana basketball fell to Big 10 rival Michigan State in regular season action on Sunday. Boos rained down from the crowd as the home team’s deficit grew.

Much of that displeasure was directed at one player. Reed Bailey shouldered the brunt of the criticism despite playing less than 10 minutes.

The forward is in his first season with the Hoosiers. He has not met the fanbase’s expectation to this point.

Bailey is a transfer from Davidson. He averaged double figures in each of his last two seasons with the Wildcats. Last year, the 6-10 junior scored 18.8 points a night. That production has not translated to the Power 4.

Indiana basketball fans booed one of their own.

Bailey transferred to Bloomington as part of the Hoosiers’ Top 10 transfer class in 2025. He’s averaged 8.8 points a game across 29 appearances.

Criticism of his play was loud in the most recent loss to Michigan State.

Bailey was booed each time he entered the game. He played just eight minutes due to early foul trouble, going scoreless with a turnover on the offensive side of the ball.

Fans urged the forward to be more aggressive. He was not, even when matched up against much smaller defenders.

The boos represented an accumulation of frustration experienced by the fanbase amid a four-game losing skid. NCAA Tournament chances are slipping.

The Hoosiers were expected to compete for a Big 10 title after spending $10 million on its 2025-26 roster. Some of those NIL investments have not paid off, leading donors to believe money has been wasted.

Reed Bailey is not the sole reason for slump. He was the target of vitriol this weekend. Will that poor fan behavior impact recruiting?

Isaiah Hill was in attendance.

The five-star recruit is the top player in the state of Indiana for the 2027 high school basketball cycle. The Hoosiers are battling the likes of Notre Dame, Louisville, and Kentucky for his signature.

Many believe the crowd’s disdain for Reed Bailey could negatively impact his recruitment. What message does it send?

Indiana remains a top basketball destination despite recent struggles. Its fanbase is passionate, maybe to a fault.

Though slim, there is still a path to the Big Dance. The Hoosiers will need to finish the regular season strong while picking up a win or two in the Big 10 tournament.

If the program misses March Madness for a third straight time, calls for some sort of change will be heard. And should recruits be turned off by fans’ criticism, reinforcements might not be on the way.
