The Atlanta Falcons will not be playing in the NFL postseason this year. The franchise learned of its playoff destiny in the final week of the regular season.

The Falcons entered a season ending matchup against the rival Panthers on Sunday with slim playoff hopes. They were dashed due to on-field results, which included an overtime loss to Carolina.

Atlanta came into its finale sitting at 8-8 on the season. That was good for a second-place spot in the NFC South standings, trailing the division leading Bucs by one game.

The Falcons needed some help to make the postseason in the form of a Tampa Bay loss. They also needed to beat the Panthers to secure a playoff spot. Neither would come to fruition.

Atlanta jumped out to a 24-17 first half lead before the Panthers stormed back after the halftime break. Carolina scored 21 of the game’s next 28 points to take a late advantage. A Bijan Robinson touchdown with under a minute remaining in regulation forced overtime, but that would be the last time the Falcons found the endzone.

Miles Sanders ended the matchup with a one-yard score in the extra session as Carolina squeaked out a 44-38 win. After the game, Panthers defender Jadeveon Clowney trolled.

“See y’all in Cabo,” the veteran defensive lineman was heard shouting to the crowd from the sidelines. Both teams are headed for vacation at season’s end.

It was a scene that played out a few weeks prior when the Panthers took down the Arizona Cardinals. Clowney’s taken joy in ending NFL Playoff hopes!

In the end, the result of the Panthers-Falcons game didn’t matter. Tampa Bay beat New Orleans to book its ticket to the postseason. Atlanta would’ve been on the outside looking in either way.

That information wasn’t known to Jadeveon Clowney when he celebrated Carolina’s victory. The Panthers finished the season just 5-12, but that didn’t stop the former No. 1 overall pick from being a menace. Both teams will now pack it in and put those playoff hopes on hold for an offseason longer.
