Cleveland Browns starting signal caller Deshaun Watson suffered a torn Achilles on Sunday during a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. A number of fans in the home crowd were heard cheering after seeing the passer go down with injury.

Reserve quarterback Jameis Winston was asked about the reaction after the contest. He wasn’t happy with those in attendance!

“I was raised and I was taught to love, no matter the circumstances,” he said. “Especially for people who do right by you. I’m grateful for the chance to have served Deshaun, but I am very upset with the reaction to a man who has had the world against him for the past three years…

“He put his life and his body on the line for this city.”

Deshaun Watson signed a record-setting, fully guaranteed contract with Cleveland but has largely failed to live up to the hype. He’s struggled in Year 2 with the Browns, winding up on the wrong side of history on a few different occasions.

Under center, Watson’s been sacked a league-high 33 times while recording career lows in QB rating and yards per attempt in 2024.

This injury further adds to regret felt by the organization for that massive deal, as it puts his NFL future in doubt.

Off-the-field storylines have only further influenced the outside view of Deshaun Watson amongst football fans, which Winston alluded to in his response, as he’s undergone a number of legal battles over the last few months. No matter your opinion, he doesn’t see cheering at a player’s setback as appropriate.

The Achilles injury ensures that Cleveland Browns fans get their wish with a change under center. Jameis Winston wasn’t happy with the way they celebrated that move.
