I do not know whether Jeff Brohm is going to end up coaching college football at Michigan. I do know that the current head coach at Louisville wore a red hat on the sideline at the Boca Raton Bowl.
Cardinals fans are hopeful that his selection reflects his allegiance moving forward.
Would he not choose a more neutral color if he already has one foot out of the door? Fans of college football are often delusional, and maybe that is the case here, but these kinds of theories are what make this sport so much fun— even after the regular season.
Michigan needs a college football coach.
This is the second week of an unexpected head coaching search in Ann Arbor after the ouster of Sherrone Moore. Names like Kalen DeBoer and Kenny Dillingham first emerged as potential options.
They both said no.
That leaves Jeff Brohm as the top target as of Monday afternoon. Sam Webb of 247 Sports said the Wolverines have made “direct contact” with the 54-year-old about its opening.
“Who is in the crosshairs for Michigan right now? I think you have to look at Jeff Brohm,” he said. “Jeff Brohm from Louisville, he’s been a guy they’ve been vetting very thoroughly from the very beginning. The search firm had reached out to him, reached out to his agent anyway, already. And then they made direct contact (on Sunday), and so how quickly will that escalate?”
Brohm is an interesting candidate. Some people consider him to be ACC Lane Kiffin. Others question whether he truly deserves to take over a top program based on his employment history.
Jeff Brohm is 93-59 all-time as a head coach. Good but not great.
However, he won eight or more games in 2021 and 2022 at Purdue, which is extremely hard to do. He also went 27-12 at Louisville over the last three seasons, which is a lot less challenging but still not easy.
His supporters point to his nine- and 10-win seasons with the Boilermakers and Cardinals. His haters point to at least four losses in each of the last nine years with both programs.
Jeff Brohm chose a red Louisville hat.
As the smoke starts to swirl about Michigan, Brohm coached Louisville against Toledo in the Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday. The equipment team put three different hats in his locker before the game.
One hat was black, one hat was white, one hat was red. Brohm ultimately chose the red hat.
Cardinals fans took this as a great sign. Or maybe they are grasping at straws.
Either way, fans of the program were delighted to see Brohm choose such a bold color. White or black would’ve indicated an indifference to the program. Red is a statement. He bleeds Louisville.
We’ll see if this theory proves to be true. Only time will tell.
