Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel was right in the center of an unfortunate dust-up that concluded Wednesday’s college basketball game against Florida State with an ugly scene. The 49-year-old actually put his hands on an opposing player while his team tried to fight the Seminoles and their fans.

It will be interesting to see how the ACC chooses to handle this incident.

First and foremost, the Panthers lost by 12 points. They committed two more turnovers and six more fouls than the home side. Capel was already furious with the result. He was even more angry after Florida State ran an offensive play with less than five seconds remaining. Daquan Davis passed to Malique Ewin for a wide-open dunk as time expired. Ewin recorded his third-straight double-double with the points.

Capel decided to give Ewin a piece of his mind during the handshake line. His players got in on the action and started to push their opponents while they celebrated the win. Multiple people on both sides had to be physically restrained.

In no situation should a college basketball coach put his hands on an opposing player (FSU freshman Alier Maluk) in a wrathful manner. Jeff Capel did exactly that and could receive a find or a suspension for his actions after the conference completes a formal review. If he was not the primary instigator of the kerfuffle, he played a significant role in the continuation. His own team had to hold him back.

To make matters worse, Pittsburgh players tried to fight Florida State students in the crowd as they made their way back into the tunnel. Multiple police officers had to forcibly remove them from the floor.

Panthers head coach Jeff Capel has yet to address the incident. Neither team issued a statement. They are going to let the ACC handle any further discipline.
