New York bettors are sick to their stomachs after what could qualify as the worst beat of the NFL season. A safety on the final play of the game allowed Miami to escape with a five-point win over the Jets.

That five-point number is an important one as New York entered the game as a 3.5-point underdog. The Jets were on the right side of that number for all 60 minutes of action as they never trailed by more than a field goal.

But one last ditch effort to win the game turned into disaster.

Deep in their own territory, New York’s offense began throwing laterals. After a few unsuccessful attempts, the ball got closer and closer to the wrong endzone. One final toss sealed the fate of gamblers.

The final lateral was nearly intercepted by a Dolphins defender. The ball then rolled around on the ground a while before finding its way out of bounds in the endzone. One referee signaled safety, but the final score never changed on the field.

Bettors immediately raced to the internet to find the official score. A short time after the end of the game, the NFL ruled an 11-6 win for the Dolphins, with the safety crushing the souls of Jets backers.

Many are saying it’s the worst beat of the NFL season.

One betting account tweeted, “The Jets giving up a safety on the last play of the game has to be the worst bad beat of the season…” Another posted, “Final play. Safety. Jets don’t cover. Brutal.”

What makes this result most demoralizing is the fact that New York technically never trailed by more than three points at any time during the game. Not until after the final seconds ticked off the clock the Miami get ahead by more than a field goal.

It’s certainly a fitting end to the season for Jets’ supporters.
