Despite his apparent bullishness about returning to the field “in a few weeks”, a New York Jets source says talk of Aaron Rodgers returning to the field is “insane”.
Speaking to The Athletic for a recent story about Rodgers’ attempt to comeback from an Achilles injury, one “high ranking” Jets source categorized a potential Rodgers return as “insane” and said that they don’t “see how it’s remotely possible.”
“I just don’t see how it’s remotely possible, that’s where I’m at,” one high-ranking Jets source told The Athletic, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “I’m not counting it out, but it would be insane if it happened.”
Even if Rodgers was physically capable of playing again this season, there may not be anything left worth playing for by the time he returns, as the Jets currently sit at 4-4 following an ugly Monday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in which the offense didn’t score a single touchdown.
Speaking to Chargers safety Derwin James on the field after the game, a hot mic picked up Rodgers saying that he’ll be back in “a few weeks.”
Let’s say Rodgers did return in about a month for the Jets’ December 10 matchup against the Houston Texans: that would be exactly three months (minus a day) since he tore his Achilles against the Buffalo Bills on Monday, September 11, which would undoubtedly be the fastest an NFL player has ever recovered from such an injury.
Previously, Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers was the archetype for a remarkably quick return from an Achilles injury, as he recovered after just 5.5 months. Over the weekend against the Atlanta Falcons, however, Akers once again tore his Achilles, albeit not the one that he originally hurt.
Now sitting at 4-4, the Jets will be heading to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders for Week 10 in what will surely be a must-win game if they have any hope of keeping their playoff chances alive.
