Caitlin Clark is as big of a national phenomenon as there is in sports right now. Apparently, that phenomenon is extending to Congress.

Congressman Jim Banks (R, IN-3) sent a letter to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert that asked her to crack down on the “targeting” of players like Caitlin Clark.

This comes less than a week after Clark took a cheap shot from Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter on Saturday, a play that drew widespread condemnation and discussion over whether league veterans were bullying Caitlin Clark.

Now, Banks is essentially claiming that the league’s players are bullying Caitlin Clark.

Here’s Fox59 with more.

Congressman Jim Banks (R, IN-3) sent the WNBA a letter Tuesday to ask how the league will curb “excessive physical targeting of specific players,” namely Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.

The GOP Senate nominee referenced a foul on Clark by Chennedy Carter, which happened Saturday in a game against the Chicago Sky. Banks called it an “excessive attack” that was also cheered and supported by Sky teammate Angel Reese.

“Indiana is a basketball state. We don’t wince at aggressive defense, but this was not an example
of playing ‘tough’; it was a cheap shot that could have resulted in an injury and should not be
tolerated,” Banks wrote.

Alright, that seems like a bit much, Mr. Banks. You’re telling me Congress doesn’t have anything more important to do than police cheap shots in sports? This seems like a pretty blatant ploy for attention. Granted, that seems on brand for Washington these days on both sides of the aisle.

As for Caitlin Clark, it’s getting to the point where she’s going to have to speak out about this. When the government starts getting involved, you can’t really wait any longer to speak out.

Clark’s next game is on Friday against the Washington Mystics, ironically in DC. I’m sure she will be asked about this then.
