There was no doubt that JJ McCarthy was a winner in his college career with the Michigan Wolverines. The two-year starter went 27-1 as a starter, the highest win percentage in FBS history for a quarterback with that many starts.
But, questions remained when he decided to enter the NFL Draft as a true junior that JJ McCarthy simply wasn’t nearly advanced enough as a passer at this stage in his career to get it done in the NFL. Yes, it’s very early in his career, as he’s played just one preseason game, but early returns regarding JJ McCarthy are fantastic.
The Vikings took on the Raiders in their first preseason game of the year, and Sam Darnold actually got the start over JJ McCarthy at quarterback. But, when it was McCarthy’s turn to play, he shined.

Overall, JJ McCarthy was 11-17 for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception through the air and added 18 yards on two carries on the ground. The interception came on his first drive of the game, and he was lights-out after.
The big conundrum with JJ McCarthy as a draft prospect was that Michigan did not run a prolific or advanced passing offense. Things were kept pretty simple for McCarthy, and they were not in 3rd and long very much. In the games they were, like against Penn State, they elected to play it safe on those downs. But, the arm talent definitely flashed at times and he’s always had great mobility. Things like leadership and intangibles were beyond reproach, as well.
Ultimately, this is one preseason game against backups. The verdict on JJ McCarthy is far from in. But, the 10th-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is off to a fantastic start.
