JJ Redick was introduced as the 29th head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, marking his intro to head coaching in the NBA. He addressed that somewhat lacking resume when speaking to the media in his opening press conference.
Redick, while boasting a lengthy professional basketball playing career, owns no coaching experience. He quickly got into television and media after retirement, where he’s provided viewers with incredible analysis of the game.

Many have seen Redick on national television as part of the First Take crew on ESPN – where he’s been sure to let everyone know that he’s the most knowledgeable host on set in terms of NBA analysis.
He’s hoping that the knowledge translates into coaching success in LA.
Redick’s further displayed those insights by co-hosting a podcast with Lakers star LeBron James, which many believe aided his head coaching candidacy.
The lack of experience as an NBA coach was a topic of conversation in his opening press conference. He attacked the questions head on.
JJ Redick opened with a joke about his resume.
“I have never coached in the NBA before,” he started. “I don’t know if you guys have heard that.”
It wouldn’t be the last time the topic was brought up.
He was later asked about the Lakers’ late interest shown in Dan Hurley, after it had been reported that Redick was the leader in the race.
He wasn’t discouraged by the sudden shift, referencing his own experience to that of the UCONN head coach.
“Dan Hurley is a two-time national champion at UConn. I am a two-time 55 Swish League Champion in the 3rd and 4th grade division. I understood.”

Finally, he was asked if he was looking forward to disproving any notions of predetermined failure due to that lacking professional profile. He isn’t worried about the outside noise, he’s just ready to win basketball games.
“I really don’t give a f—.”

Redick will provide a changeup from previous head coach Darvin Ham. We’ll see if he’s able to overcome the supposed disadvantage and lead Los Angeles to a title.
