JJ Redick was officially introduced as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, June 24, and his introductory press conference certainly did not disappoint.

Despite this being JJ Redick’s first coaching job, Duke’s all-time leading scorer seemed plenty confident in himself, as evidenced by his willingness to drop an F-bomb in a room full of media members.

One of Redick’s responses, however, didn’t seem to land with an unnamed media member, though, as what sounds like a massive groan can be heard following his answer to a question about LeBron James.

After he was asked what advice LeBron gave him during the Lakers’ hiring process, Redick said that he and LBJ, his former podcast co-host, did not speak about the Lakers’ head coaching job.

While it’s a virtual certainty that no one in the room believed Redick, one person was seemingly so aghast that they groaned loud enough for it to get picked up by the microphones in the room.

Redick, who turned 40 years old on the same day he was introduced as Lakers head coach, spent 15 seasons in the NBA, playing for the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Dallas Mavericks.

Before becoming the Lakers’ head coach, Redick was an established member of NBA media as he became the first active NBA player to host a podcast in 2016, which is a route many players have since followed.

Redick went on to establish his own media company in 2020 and made his broadcasting debut for ESPN in 2021. In March 2024, Redick and LeBron launched the Mind the Game podcast, although Redick says he will no longer be involved in the content space now that he’s an NBA coach.

The former shooting guard will certainly have his work cut out for him given that the Lakers — who always have championship expectations, due to both their legacy and LeBron — finished 7th in the Western Conference last season.
