The Colorado quarterback battle will be one to watch this offseason. After seeing two-year starter Shedeur Sanders bolt for the NFL, the Buffs will be forced to find a replacement.

There appear to be two players in the QB1 race. Veteran Kaidon Salter and freshman Julian Lewis. The latter staked his claim to the throne this week.

Lewis was seen dropping a perfect dime while fending off pressure in the pocket. The now-viral clip blew up on social media.

It was many fans’ first look at the talented rookie. He’s looking to make some noise in Year 1 by landing the starting role.

Julian Lewis signed with the Buffs as a four-star passer after initially committing to play for USC. The change of heart came late in the recruiting process.

Lewis decommitted from the Trojans in late November. He signed with Colorado two weeks later before enrolling in December. With his whirlwind recruitment over, the focus is now on football.

The passer made himself comfortable in Boulder immediately after stepping foot on campus. That included getting his $100,000 truck delivered by a staff assistant to ensure he ride around in style.

Despite signing the 17-year-old to be the face of the future, the Buffs also grabbed Kaidon Salter in the transfer portal. Salter previously played for Liberty where he led the Flames to 13 wins in 2023. He went 8-4 last season before making the jump to the Big XII.

Salter may have a leg up given his experience, but Julian Lewis refuses to back down. He’s mimicked Shedeur Sanders in many ways, which we saw with his “Perfect Timing” celebration in that viral spring practice throw.

Lewis has filled Sanders’ seat in team meetings. He’s looking to take over his spot under center, too. He’s carried himself in the fashion a QB1 should during his short stint on campus.

The hard work has paid immediate dividends in terms of NIL payouts. The passer’s already racked up numerous deals and currently boasts a $1.1 million valuation at On3 Sports.

He still has a way to go to catch up to Sanders’ $6.5 million value from last year, but he appears on his way. Julian Lewis announced his presence in the QB race at spring practice. We’ll see if he can beat out his veteran competition this offseason.
