Team USA was the favorite to take home the gold medal in both 100m relays that were held at the Olympics on Friday, but the American men were DQed from a race that led to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau trolling the United States in the most on-brand manner imaginable.

The quartet of Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry, Gabby Thomas, and Sha’Carri Richardson were expected to win the women’s 100m relay that unfolded at the Stade de France on Friday and managed to do exactly that after Richardson stepped up to deliver a clutch anchor leg to get some redemption after the team settled for silver at the Olympics in 2021.

The victory meant America was in a very good position to pull off the relay sweep, as Christian Coleman, Kenneth Bednarek, Kyree King, and Fred Kerley were the odds-on favorite to win the men’s final where America was hoping to bounce back in a big way after failing to qualify for the final race in Tokyo (Kerley had some extra motivation when you consider he was a member of that squad).

However, disaster struck the United States after the first 100 meters due to a botched handoff between Coleman and Bednarek that essentially dashed any hopes of a medal; Kerley crossed the line in seventh place (only ahead of China), but Team USA was ultimately disqualified after officials ruled the first handoff took place outside of the designated exchange zone.

Canada ultimately walked away with the gold medal in a race where Noah Lyles had been expected to compete before withdrawing after he revealed he’d tested positive for COVID prior to coming in third in the 200m final.

However, he was still on the minds of plenty of people in Canada due to the disrespect he deployed after Team USA topped the squad from America’s Hat in the same race at the 2024 World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas earlier this year.

The list of people who kept those receipts included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who took a victory lap online in the wake of his country’s gold medal win by posting one of the most passive-aggressive apologies you’ll ever encounter.

Well played.
