Kaiya Wynn decided to leave the women’s college basketball program at Tennessee just a few days before the start of the postseason. She did not appreciate how she was treated by head coach Kim Caldwell on Senior Day.

The fifth-year fan favorite did not play even a single minute.

As a result of the snub, Wynn will no longer finish out the 2025-26 women’s college basketball season with the Vols over the next few weeks. Her career is over.

Kaiya Wynn is a fan favorite at Tennessee.

If we’re being completely honest, Wynn never quite lived up to expectations as a player. The former four-star recruit ranked as one of the top 50 players in the country in the Class of 2021 but she never averaged more than 13 minutes per game in four seasons.

That should not take away from her tangible contributions to the program!

Wynn always made an impact on the game whenever she did get on the floor. That was especially true on the glass and as a rebounder.

Perhaps more importantly, Kaiya Wynn was a steadfast leader.

We are in an era of collegiate athletics where athletes constantly hit the transfer portal in search of more playing time or a new opportunity. Wynn never wavered. She was always loyal to the Vols. It was never a thought in her mind to leave— even when she missed all of last season with a torn Achilles.

Not only did her teammates look up to her, Wynn made the SEC Academic Honor Roll in four-straight years and represented the women’s basketball program on the university’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She is not just another end-of-bench player. She is the heartbeat of the program!

Not anymore.

Kim Caldwell refused to put her in the game on Senior Day.

Kaiya Wynn spent five years at the University of Tennessee. Sunday was her last true home game at Thompson–Boling Arena. The crowd went wild during her pregame introduction. It was a well-deserved ovation for someone who, no matter what obstacles were put in front of her, gave her everything to the program and to the university.

However, Wynn did not see the court in a 10-point loss to Vanderbilt. Head coach Kim Caldwell could not find a way to get her in the game.

It should be noted that Wynn played in only nine games this season and the Volunteers really needed to beat the Commodores. Caldwell was trying to win.

That does not change what happened.

Caldwell had an opportunity to put Wynn in the starting lineup, only to sub her out at the first dead ball. That did not happen. Kaiya Wynn did not play a single minute on Senior Day. Rather, the fifth-year senior did not play even a single second on Senior Day. She sat the entire game on the bench!

She is leaving the women’s basketball program.

Tennessee women’s basketball is not having a great year and the players are frustrated with their head coach. Sunday was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Kaiya Wynn was hoping to get her first-career start for her final home game. When that did not happen, Caldwell only asked her to play the last 15 seconds of a four-possession game that was trending toward a loss.

The message was received loud and clear! Wynn no longer feels valued so she left the team.

“The news has now broken that I have decided to step away from the Lady Vol program. This decision was not made lightly or instantly. For the past five years I have given my all for Tennessee and have not regretted doing so once. Obviously, my last two seasons on the team have been less than ideal for many reasons, but the one night I was most looking forward to was senior night. As someone who has never started a career game, I was hoping to start in my last appearance in Thompson-Boling. That obviously did not happen, and to be asked to check into the game with 15 seconds left while losing was not how I wanted to spend my final moments in my arena after five years. Although that was not the sole reason, it was the breaking point for me. I have the utmost love and respect for my teammates and this program and wish everyone nothing but the best. Thank you Lady Vol Nation for the past 5 years, you all made this kid from Tennessee so extremely happy. 🧡”

The Volunteers will play in the SEC Tournament later this week and are still projected to make March Madness even though it is a down year. Wynn will not be with them during the postseason.
