Despite being the only undefeated team in the National Football League, the Kansas City Chiefs have looked a bit broken on offense this season, which is a problem they’re attempting to remedy by trading for All-Pro wide receiver Deandre Hopkins.
According to reports from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are sending a conditional fourth-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for DeAndre Hopkins.
Kansas City has had a massive hole at the wide receiver position since second-year wideout Rashee Rice suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. They also lost Marquise “Hollywood” Brown in the preseason and JuJu Smith-Schuster to a hamstring injury over the weekend.
Prior to trading for DeAndre Hopkins, the Chiefs had just two healthy receivers on their roster: rookie Xavier Worthy and veteran Justin Watson. The pair have just 22 catches combined so far this season.
The Chiefs’ offensive struggles can be epitomized by the play of future Hall of Fame QB Patrick Mahomes, as he has more interceptions (8) than touchdowns (6) so far this season.
“The addition gives quarterback Patrick Mahomes another target. Mahomes had said last week that he had ‘extreme confidence’ in the Chiefs’ receivers following the marquee trades of Davante Adams and Amari Cooper.” [via ESPN]
DeAndre Hopkins, 32 years old, was drafted by the Houston Texans with the 27th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Considered to be the best wide receiver in the NFL during his peak years, Hopkins is a 3-time All-Pro first-team member and a five-time Pro Bowler.
After spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Texans, Hopkins played with the Arizona Cardinals from 2020 to 2022 before landing with the Titans in 2023.
During his 11-year NFL career, Hopkins has caught 943 passes for 12,528 yards and 79 touchdowns. He’s also incredibly durable, having played at least 9 games in every season of his career. So far this season, Hopkins has 15 receptions for 173 yards and a touchdown.
