Kansas Baseball Controversy Walk-Off Brady Counsel

Kansas completed its four-game sweep of Milwaukee on Sunday and moved to 14-1 during the 2025 college baseball season. The Jayhawks scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning even though the run never scored.

They successfully completed the walk-off win because of a unique ruling that could be considered controversial.

I was not previously aware of this unique rule in college baseball, nor do I know if it applies to MLB. However, I am fascinated to learn that a game can end on an overturned call that creates a hypothetical!

The Panthers scored six quick runs in the first inning on Sunday afternoon and jumped out to a 7-3 lead at the end of the fifth. It quickly evaporated during the bottom of the sixth when the home team moved back in front by a score of 9-7. Milwaukee then tied it back up with one run in the seventh and the eighth.

That brings us to the 10th. Kansas got out of a jam in the top half.

A strikeout and a fly out got things started in the bottom half but Dariel Osoria kept the Jayhawks alive with a single. He also advanced to second on a balk. Now lets set the scene.

Brady Counsell, the son of longtime Milwaukee Brewers and current Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell, stepped into the box two outs in a tie game with a runner on second. It was a 2-1 count.

The true fourth-year senior second baseman knocked a ground ball to shortstop. He hustled down the line to try and beat the throw to the bag. He could not do so. The throw beat Counsell to first for what seemed to be the third out of the inning.

Upon further review, Milwaukee’s first baseman did not have his foot on the bag. Counsell was ruled safe. Osoria, who had already turned around third when the throw reached first, was allowed to score.

Per NCAA Baseball Replay Regulations, if the play is overturned, runners will be placed based on where they would’ve ended up if the call was correct. After the umpires determined that the out call on Counsell was to be overturned, they decided to score Osoria based on his position when the play was incorrectly stopped.

As weird as it might be, it was the proper protocol. The umpires made a subjective ruling that determined the outcome. Kansas won on a walk-off overturned out call! Get out the brooms!
