Drake is a huge fan of the NFL and often places million-dollar bets on the Super Bowl. However, the Toronto-born rapper is probably going to skip out on this year’s halftime show because Kendrick Lamar is about to dance all over his grave.
Sunday’s announcement was the final nail in the coffin for a longstanding beef between the two artists.
For those who are not caught up on the drama, ‘Not Like Us’ is the killshot in a long series of back-and-forth jabs between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The Mustard-produced track is riddled with brutal references to the OVO brand, Drake’s family, his upbringing, and even his favorite basketball team— among so many other things. Most notably, K-Dot further escalates his serious allegations of pedophilia and exploitation, which are aimed at the Canadian and his crew.
Super Bowl LVIII drew an average viewership of 123.7 million in February. The big game drew no less than 100 million viewers in every year since 2009.
That means 100 million people across the globe will watch King Kendrick perform at halftime in February. Drake should probably turn off his T.V. and pick the game back up in the third quarter…
Kendrick Lamar was cryptic again…
The announcement video is open to interpretation!
First and foremost, Roc Nation partnered with the NFL to pick a performer. Jay-Z essentially made the decision.
Drake and Hova don’t necessarily have a formal beef. It’s more of a cold war. Maybe the Super Bowl performer was his way of taking a formal stance. Maybe not.
Either way, Lamar’s video shared a close resemblance to the Otis video.
On a greater level, the American flag might be a nod to how General George Patton’s legendary speech to the Third Army was depicted in the movie ‘PATTON.’ Patton urged his group of inexperienced soldiers to do their duty regardless of internal fears. He encouraged them to be aggressive with constant offensive action.
Perhaps Lamar was establishing America’s dominance over Canada. It also might’ve been his way of saying that he is not going to back down.
All of this potential symbolism is in the eye of the beholder. Drake fans will call it a reach. Fine.
What is not up for debate is the direct shot at his rival!
Drake teased a “round two” of his feud with the Los Angeles legend. He has yet to deliver. Lamar not-so-subtly jabbed at the false promise during his video and declared victory.
You know it’s only one opportunity to win a championship — no round twos.
— Kendrick Lamar
Regardless of what is or is not directed at Drake, it is yet another brutal ‘L’ for the Canadian. He and J-Cole claimed that their collaboration on ‘First Person Shooter’ was as big at the Super Bowl.
It was the premise for the entire chorus!
[Verse: J-Cole]
Me and Drizzy, this s— like the Super Bowl
Man, this s— damn near big as the….[Chorus: Drake]
— First Person Shooter
Big as the what? (Ah)
Big as the what? (Mm)
Big as the what? (Ayy)
Big as the Super Bowl
Well…
Kendrick Lamar is actually performing at the Super Bowl.
