Although the Kentucky Derby is not until Saturday evening, horse racing will take place on the track at Churchill Downs throughout the entire weekend. The highlight of Thursday took place when jockey Junior Alvarado fell off his horse, Caramel Chip, during the ninth race of the afternoon.
It was the impressive effort from the Outriders that stole the show!
For those who are not familiar with the ins and outs of horse racing, Outriders effectively serve as the lifeguards. They are the men and women who suddenly arrive on the track after a race to assist with the post parade and to help steer the horses back back to the paddock and/or winners circle. They also patrol the track throughout the morning to ensure it is up to standard.
Their most important job is to keep the riders and the horses safe. They are the first people to the scene when a horse loses its jockey and runs free. They are first responders in case of an accident.
The Outriders at Churchill Downs are the best in the business!
Junior Alvarado, who is set to ride Sovereignty during the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, rode Caramel Chip during the ninth race on Thursday afternoon. His horse stumbled out of the gate, which caused him to fall off.
Caramel Chip did not care that he bucked his jockey and kept running. He actually placed second in the race but he was disqualified because Alvarado did not make it through the finish line.
Fortunately, neither the horse nor the jockey were injured. Alvarado was able to get right back to his feet. Caramel Chip was quickly corralled by the Outriders after an initial juke. It was an impressive save!
The Outriders do not get enough love unless something goes awry. They play an integral role in horse racing but they are not properly recognized until they are forced into action.
Thursday’s save at the Kentucky Derby was the perfect example. Well done, outriders!
