The Kentucky Wildcats suffered an embarrassing conference opening loss to South Carolina over the weekend, losing 31-6 on their home field. As it turns out, the defeat will soon be broadcast to the college football world as part of a Netflix series.
Soon after falling flat in Lexington, it was revealed that the Wildcats were chosen as one of the teams to be highlighted as part of an SEC football show. They couldn’t have picked a worse time!
More from On3 Sports:
Sources tell KSR’s Matt Jones that the SEC signed a deal with Netflix for a docuseries about SEC football and Kentucky is one of several teams featured. In May, word first broke about the series, which will be similar to Drive to Survive about Formula 1 and Full Swing about the PGA Tour. According to Jones, it will be released in 2025.
The first game the crews were in town for? The 31-6 loss to the Gamecocks. Netflix crews embedded with the Cats all week leading up to Saturday’s game and were in the locker room before and after to capture the scene.
Netflix has been adamant on invading the sports arena, breaking out behind-the-scenes docuseries on professional golf, racing, and college athletics.
The SEC is up next!
On paper, this seemed to be the perfect weekend for the Kentucky-Netflix marriage. The Wildcats entered as two-score home favorites against a team that had barely squeaked by Old Dominion the week prior.
And there was added motivation to bring even more of a spotlight to the program on a national stage.
A win over the Gamecocks could’ve all but secured a visit from College Gameday for a Week 3 meeting with undefeated Georgia. Instead, it’s South Carolina who will host next week when it welcomes LSU to town.
The double whammy!
Looking for any reason to explain the Wildcats’ poor performance on the field, a portion of the fanbase immediately blamed Netflix’s presence for distracting players from the task at hand.
No wonder they weren’t focused on the task at hand.

Was the show really a distraction? Did Kentucky just have an off day? Maybe a combination of the two.
Whatever the case, there will be plenty of South Carolina fans tuning in when the Netflix series is released in order to get an inside look at their win over the Wildcats.
