Kentucky Wildcats running back Seth McGowan is under fire from college football fans after he threw a football at a wheelchair bound South Carolina fan during Saturday’s SEC showdown between the two teams.

The incident occurred after McGowan scored a 20-yard touchdown earlier in the first quarter. He then proceeded to chuck a ball into the stands, which unintentionally drilled the fan sitting behind the end zone.

While McGowan likely wasn’t aiming for the fan, he also probably didn’t know that the fan was someone of note. As it turns out, the man seated behind the end zone was the grandfather of South Carolina star quarterback LaNorris Sellers.

Sellers confirmed after the Gamecocks’ 35-13 victory that he held onto a game ball to give to his grandfather, who was hit by the ball McGowan threw.

“I saw everything happen,” Sellers said. “I saw it, then they showed it on the Jumbotron, and I was like, ‘Oh, yo, that’s my granddad.'”

McGowan Has Now Issued An Apology

Whether he intended to hit Sellers’ grandfather or not, it’s still a pretty bad look for McGowan. He seemed to realize as much fairly quickly and took to social media after the game to issue an apology.

“Today during our game vs South Carolina, I threw a ball after a touchdown meaning to throw it at the barrier in front of the stands and during a high energy moment the ball struck a fan. What I did was absolutely unacceptable and not at all reflective of myself nor this program,” he posted on X.

“If anyone can get me in contact with the fan or his family I would like to formally apologize to them and make it up any way possible. Also I would like to apologize to the entire fans of South Carolina Football and their program.”

McGowan shouldn’t have a hard time getting in contact with Sellers, and hopefully will be able to issue an apology to his grandfather.

Thankfully, the older gentleman appeared to be okay after the incident.
