Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson made his return to Ford Field on Sunday after leaving the Detroit Lions to coach Caleb Williams. He was mocked by his former players after an ugly interception.
Kerby Joseph poured salt in the wound with a savage celebration.
Johnson’s first season as an NFL head coach did not get off to a great start. There is plenty of time to get things turned around and this could be a multi-year process but the Motor City can’t stop laughing.
Ben Johnson got booed.
I am pro-boo. Boo a baby. I don’t care! Booing is fun.
However, I do see the irony in how Lions fans reacted to Johnson’s return to Detroit on Sunday.
Their former offensive coordinator stuck around for a year or two longer than anyone expected. He turned down multiple head coaching interviews to try and win a Super Bowl with Dan Campbell.
It’s not like he abandoned the organization in the middle of the night under the guise of darkness. The 39-year-old offensive genius showed proved loyal until an opportunity came along he could not refuse.
And yet, Johnson was still greeted by boos as he walked in and out of the tunnel. It made him smile.

His smug grin turned upside down during the second quarter.
Caleb Williams threw a horrendous interception.
All things considered, the Bears did not play that poorly during the first half. They recorded more than 200 yards of total offense and converted three of five attempts on third down.
Caleb Williams completed 14 of 19 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.
It was two turnovers, four penalties and defensive ineptitude that gave Detroit a 14-point lead at halftime. That includes one really, really, really bad interception.
Aidan Hutchinson forced the quarterback out of the pocket. Williams threw a deep pass directly to the defense.

Kerby Joseph made a great play but the ball was nowhere near its intended target.
The Lions defense immediately ran to the end zone to celebrate. They lined up in an a faux offensive formation to mimic the iconic ‘stumble bum’ trick play.

Ben Johnson was the mastermind of the ‘stumble bum’ last season. Jared Goff pretended to trip and fumble which presented him with a wide-open touchdown when the defense crashed.
Some nice trickery by the Lions and Jared Goff finds Sam LaPorta in the end zone! 🙌

Now almost nine months later, the Lions are mocking Johnson for leaving Detroit to coach Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears. It is brilliant troll work.
