No, Kirk Herbstreit did not shade Bill Belichick on the air during his North Carolina football debut. A hot mic moment was taken out of context and spun into supposed hate.

The ESPN analyst clarified his comments after the game. Social media was trying to make something out of nothing!

Belichick coached his first college game in Chapel Hill on Monday against TCU. The final result wasn’t what was hoped for.

The Tar Heels came out with a bang, scoring a touchdown on a flawless opening drive to take an early 7-0 lead. It was all Horned Frogs after that.

TCU ripped off 41 straight points to put the game out of reach. They’d eventually win, 48-14.

Bill Belichick’s debut was a disaster.

The Tar Heels played sloppy on both sides of the ball. After scoring that first touchdown, they failed to complete a pass for two hours of real time.

North Carolina scored seven points over the final 55 minutes of play. TCU’s defense scored 14 over that same timeframe.

Costly turnovers, drops, and a leaky front line (8 TFL) plagued the offense. The defense wasn’t much better.

TCU QB Josh Hoover picked the secondary apart. The Horned Frogs averaged 7.4 yards per carry, with Kevorian Barnes going for 113 on 11 attempts. Tackling was an issue.

It was an all-around poor performance. Belichick looked miserable from start to finish. Kirk Herbstreit laughed at his misfortunes… or did he?

Kirk Herbstreit did NOT mock the Tar Heels.

A hot mic caught Herbstreit chatting with the ESPN crew as a commercial break ended. He supposedly said, “They’re bad,” referring to the North Carolina football team.

Most listeners could make out Herbstreit saying, “You’re bad,” a comment that had nothing to do with the Tar Heels. He chose to confirm that notion online after the fact.

Said “you’re bad” to my spotter Deron for something he said as we were coming back on air. Manipulation at its finest!

Regardless of what was said, North Carolina was bad. They’ll hope to see marked improvement in Game 2 against Charlotte before hopping into conference play.
