Kylian Mbappe is widely considered the best player in the world. The former Paris St. Germain striker, who moved to Real Madrid this summer, has had legendary performances for his club, and especially the French National Team.

That’s why the entire sporting world was completely stunned when the 2018 World Cup Champion and 2022 World Cup Golden Boot winner missed a one-on-one chance against Austria in France’s opening match of UEFA Euro 2024.

The last time we saw Mbappe playing in a major tournament, he scored an incredible hat trick in France’s thrilling 3-3 (4-2) loss to Argentina in the finals of the 2022 World Cup. And, it looked like he was certain to get on the score sheet once again on Monday in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Mbappe won a 50/50 ball with athleticism that would make any NFL wide receiver jealous and galloped away from the Austria defense towards a helpless Patrick Pentz. And then, with no defensive pressure and on his preferred right foot, he missed!

Watching it live, I couldn’t believe it. I think the tens of millions of people watching around the world were waiting for the net to ripple. Instead, he missed everything.

France would win, 1-0, on this own goal from the first half.

But, everyone will remember that Mbappe miss as rare proof that he is, indeed, human.

To add insult to injury for Kylian Mbappe, he took a shot in the face, and had to leave the match.

If that is indeed a broken nose, it will be interesting to see how it is handled and how much time he has to miss.
