New LSU Tigers football coach Lane Kiffin, certainly not unfamiliar with controversy, has continued his noisy start to his tenure at the school with an error usually reserved for teenagers and 20-somethings: posting too much online. Over the weekend, Kiffin tweeted and then deleted a post tagging President Trump.
As our in-house SEC expert tells me, the post is typical of Lane Kiffin’s social media presence: “He’s just being a troll on social media. He tags people. He stirs the pot. It’s all about him. It’s just another Saturday for Lane.”
Even as someone not immersed in college football lore, I know this to be true simply by working on the internet for a decade, while also remembering that the last time Kiffin popped up on my feed was when he posted a contextless picture of four sweaty college-aged girls after a workout class.
While those types of posts can be waved away as harmless — at least as far as his agent and employer are concerned — if not a bit strange/edgy, Kiffin’s latest “troll” attempt seems to have backfired as he decided to delete the post, a telltale sign of contrition.
New and noisy head LSU football coach Lane Kiffin posted and then deleted a tweet tagging President Trump following backlash on social media
The photo in question was of two LSU-colored hats that read “Make Baton Rouge Great.” Not only was Kiffin copping the divisive President’s infamous motto, but he also tagged the 79-year-old, leading to backlash on social media. While there was plenty of support for Kiffin’s post, too, his deletion suggests that the praise of those people wasn’t worth the subsequent heat.
Kiffin obviously deleted the tweet and reposted it later with a different caption (below), which could mean a multitude of things but certainly means one of them: either he regretted the post from a moral or business standpoint, he didn’t think it’d be as controversial as it was and didn’t want to deal with the backlash, or someone above him made him delete it. Still, as they say, the internet lives forever and the damage was done.

“You’re so f——- pathetic,” was the top reply to Kiffin’s original deleted tweet.
“Not to be that guy but Trump’s agents are on the streets executing people, so forgive me if I view this as a bigger deal than just more ‘trolling’ from Lane Kiffin,” read one popular response.
“I love LSU and this should matter to anyone Black sending their kid to LSU,” posted The Ringer‘s Van Lathan.
“And y’all goofy a– keep sending your son’s with Lane Kiffin. Couldn’t be me,” a third added.
“As Trump’s ICE Nazis continue their murderous rampage of terror across the US, LSU coach Lane Kiffin thought it’d be a good idea to tag the pedophile führer with a MAGA Nazi-inspired hat. What Black mother and father would want their son to go play for this f—— ignoramus?” was a fourth remark.

I don’t understand how black parents send their kids off to play for some of these coaches https://t.co/kBTNLzNHa6

Black parents let their kid’s talents get exploited by anyone with the biggest check. Lane Kiffin is making generational wealth off the backs of minorities while skirting and flirting with bigotry, xenophobia, and classism. https://t.co/J5UWnNawYl

Despite his messy exit from Ole Miss — and virtually everywhere else he’s ever worked — and his strange social media habits, Kiffin has gotten off to a hot start at LSU as the team has the #1 transfer portal class in the country by a wide margin. The Tigers are also currently the only team in the country to sign more than one five-star transfer, and the only team to sign more than 10 four-stars.
