Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin reignited his beef with a former fanbase ahead of the Rebels’ 2025 season opener. Tennessee was the unexpected target of online trolling.
The Vols caught a vicious stray as Kiffin warned his team about Week 1 upsets. He brought up the past in hopes of avoiding a repeat.
Kiffin remains the best social media follow in the SEC. His incessant ribbing of conference rivals provides entertainment throughout the offseason.
Talking season is almost over, but he opted to throw one more jab before his opener.
Lane Kiffin’s beef with Tennessee explained.
It’s been told time and again, but we’ll provide a refresher for those in need of a history lesson. Kiffin was very briefly the head coach at the University of Tennessee in 2009. He bailed for USC after just one season.
The decision to leave following a 7-6 campaign enraged those in Knoxville. Riots were started. Threats were made.
Tennessee then went through a period of mediocrity that saw multiple coaching changes. The names Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, and Jeremy Pruitt can still pique a sense of PTSD amongst the fanbase.
Times have changed, though. The Vols are in good hands with Josh Heupel, fresh off an appearance in the College Football Playoff. The program is trending up!
Still, Kiffin won’t let them forget the past.

In 2019, Tennessee was upset by Georgia State in Neyland Stadium. The defense was unable to stop the Panthers’ offensive unit, which racked up 213 rushing yards and 38 points.
Now, Georgia State has been no slouch over the last few seasons. They’ve beaten Vanderbilt in addition to Tennessee. They’ve held their own with the likes of South Carolina, North Carolina, Auburn, and Wisconsin.
They’ll have an opportunity to again make a statement in Oxford. The Panthers will be Ole Miss’s Week 1 opponent in 2025.
Lane Kiffin is doing what he can to prepare his team for a potential upset. He’s motivating the Rebels at Tennessee’s expense.
