The South Carolina football team nearly pulled off an upset of fourth-ranked Alabama on Saturday evening in Williams-Brice Stadium. Those hopes came crashing down in the final moments of the fourth quarter.
The Gamecocks watched the Crimson Tide score 15 points in two minutes time to leave with a 29-22 victory. Students were robbed the opportunity to storm the field on homecoming.
It was a game the home team likely feels as if it gave away. South Carolina outgained its opponent, missed a field goal, and failed to convert a two-point conversion in the seven-point loss.
It gifted Alabama 14 easy points on costly turnovers.
After grabbing a 3-0 lead early in the game, a Gamecocks receiver dropped an uncontested pass that bounced directly into the hands of a defender. It was returned for a touchdown to give Alabama its first lead.

The Gamecocks trailed 14-6 at halftime. They stormed back with 16 straight points to regain the lead in the fourth quarter. An upset was brewing!
Alabama football ruined South Carolina’s night.
The Gamecocks held a 22-14 lead with 10 minutes left to play. The vibes in Williams-Brice Stadium were high.
They took a small hit when Alabama methodically moved the ball down the field on a 14-play touchdown drive that ate up nearly eight minutes of play. A two-point conversion tied the contest with 2:16 to play.
Still, the home crowd was hopeful for a win. South Carolina had the ball on the heels of three second-half scoring drives. Students began positioning themselves to storm the field in celebration.
The SEC has cracked down on field storming in recent years. Mississippi State was made an example earlier this season after an upset of Arizona State.
The Bulldogs were fined $500,000 for the celebration. It is the new league fee for failure to follow protocol.
Mississippi State fans did not allow the Sun Devils to safely leave the playing surface. It did not appear South Carolina would be courteous to Alabama, either.

In the end, it didn’t matter. Hopes were dashed two plays into the final possession. LaNorris Sellers was stripped by an Alabama defender while fighting for yardage. The Crimson Tide recovered the fumble.
Alabama scored five plays later to win.
Fans did not celebrate. South Carolina students did not storm the football field. No fine was incurred.
The Gamecocks would’ve much preferred a win, despite the potential punishment.
