Houston defeated LSU by three points in the Texas Bowl on Saturday night but Latrell McCutchin Sr. chose not to celebrate with his team. The true senior defensive back made sure to shake the hand of every single opposing player as they made their way off of the field.
It was an honorable act of sportsmanship.
In a world where college football brawls, trash talk and controversies often steal the headlines, this kind of behavior deserves just as much shine. Shoutout to McCutchin’s parents and head coach Willie Fritz for raising and developing such a high-character individual.
Houston out-paced LSU in the Texas Bowl.
There was a lot of chatter about the Tigers during the preseason. They were expected to compete for a national title with Garrett Nussmeier at quarterback.
Things did not go according to plan.
LSU lost five games during the regular season and Brian Kelly was fired. It also lost the Texas Bowl on Saturday.
Even though Lane Kiffin’s staff has yet to take over the offense, the offense was actually not the issue. Michael Van Buren threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. The run game was lacking during the second half because the Tigers had to play from behind, sure, but they scored 35 points. That should be enough to win the game.
Defensive coordinator Blake Baker turned down the head coaching job at Tulane to stay on Kiffin’s staff. His unit allowed 38 points to Houston. Yikes.
The offense could not score enough points to keep pace with the Cougars. The defense lost the game.
LSU also allowed four sacks. Latrel McCutchin, a transfer from USC and Oklahoma, recorded his first sack since 2022 in his final collegiate game during the second quarter. It was a big hit. BOOM!

He also showed the utmost respect to the Bayou Bengals after the game.
Latrell McCutchin Sr. displayed true sportsmanship.
McCutchin actually recovered LSU’s onside kick attempt to secure the win for Houston.

The celebration was on as soon as the clock it zero. It is the first 10-win season since 2021 and the first 10-win season as a member of the Big 12 Conference.
Willie Fritz was throwing racks of BBQ ribs to his players during the celebration, because of course.

Meanwhile, McCutchin was nowhere to be found. He was on the other end of the field, near the LSU tunnel. The true fourth-year senior made sure to show his respect for every player on the losing team as they made their way back into the locker room. It did not matter whether they played or not.
Now this is good sportsmanship… pic.twitter.com/YlerW7C09l

Latrell McCutchin Sr. put others before himself. It was a hard-fought game. He was proud to play against them. That’s cool to see.
