Lionel Messi has seen everything there is to see and won everything there is to win in his incredible, all-time great soccer career. But, even the great Messi was brought to tears by the disappointment of not being able to finish the Copa America final for Argentina against Colombia.

Messi, playing in what may be his last major tournament final with Argentina, was forced off the pitch due to an ankle history that could keep him out for a long time.

Midway through the second half of a scoreless draw, the all-time legend took a shot to the ankle, causing him to be subbed off. Take a look at the forward, who is clearly very distraught.

And, he has reason to be. Not only is Lionel Messi missing out on a chance to win yet another major tournament with Argentina after going so long to start his career without one. But, the 37-year-old picked up what looks to be a pretty painful ankle injury, as well. Take a look at the swelling.

That’s a brutal break for Lionel Messi, who surely would like to get back to playing with his Inter Miami teammates in the MLS as they chase a championship.

That being said, it’s going to be a third major international tournament victory for Lionel Messi with Argentina. This Lautaro Martinez goal in extra time gave Argentina the win.

Sunday’s final was delayed over an hour due to unruly fan behavior prior to the game that saw fans storm the gates and thousands of supporters flood in without a ticket.

Messi hasn’t committed to playing in the 2026 World Cup in North America, though it seems more likely than not that a healthy Messi would be there.
