Montana quarterback Logan Fife and head coach Bobby Hauck had to be separated during a heated altercation during Saturday’s college football game against Portland State. It appeared for a moment as though the aggressive exchange was going to turn physical.

Fortunately, they were able to make amends after finally pulling away during a blowout win.

Hauck led the Grizzlies to the FCS championship game last season. Now in his seventh year of a second stint with the program, his team is ranked No. 10 in the country at 7-3 with losses North Dakota, Weber State and UC Davis. However, he has yet to make a decision at the most important position on the field.

Fife and Keali’i Ah Yat have split time at quarterback since the start of fall camp. They both played significant snaps during the first 10 week of the season. That trend continued against the Pilots.

Ah Yat started the game and did not play well. He completed only seven of his 13 pass attempts for 50 yards with an interception and ran for only 10 yards on four carries. Montana did not score a touchdown during the first half went into the locker room down 3-0.

Hauck went to the bench to begin the third quarter and put Fife into the game. The switch immediately proved to be the right decision with a five-play, 72-yard touchdown drive that lasted just 119 seconds.

Fife ran it in from one yard out for the Grizzlies’ first points of the afternoon and celebrated by chucking the ball into the air. Unfortunately, the Big Sky officials flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct. Portland State accepted a penalty to be assessed on the kickoff.

Huack was furious with the celebration and went at his quarterback on the sideline. Fife did not respond well to the head coach’s criticism so they had to be separated by other members of the coaching staff.

It was pretty intense!

Both parties needed a moment to calm down but they eventually embraced each other after the kickoff and appeared to be on better terms.

Bobby Huack forgave his quarterback.

A dominant second-half performance also helped to mend the relationship.

Logan Fife finished with four total touchdowns, including three touchdown passes. He saved Montana’s college football season with a 28-point outing in an 11-point win. All is well that ends well?
