A source close to the family confirmed with ABC57 that Notre Dame legend, Lou Holtz, has reportedly entered into hospice care at the age of 89.

Holtz held the position of head coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 1986 to 1996 where he led the Irish to a perfect 12-0 season in 1988 with a National Championship and a Fiesta Bowl victory in 1989.

On Saturday night, rumors swirled on social media that Holtz had passed.

On Sunday, Holtz’ son Skip Holtz provided an update on his father’s condition and cleared up any misinformation on social media.

Appreciate everyone’s text and prayers. Dad is 89 and he is STILL fighting the fight! Only the man upstairs knows how much time is left on the clock. 🙏Cherishing the time we still have together in Orlando.

Fans on social media are sending prayers for Holtz and his family.

“THE reason #NotreDame football became relevant and championship worthy again in the 80s was because of Coach…had the pleasure to meet and visit with him a couple of times as well. Love and prayers to the Holtz family!” commented one fan.
