Born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, Poirier is one of the most popular fighters in MMA history after going against some of the sport’s biggest names, including Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Islam Makhachev.

Poirier has talked about the importance of having his retirement fight at home.

“The UFC is coming back to New Orleans on July 19,” Poirier told ESPN’s Pat McAfee. “It’s going to be my final fight. I’m going to lay the gloves down in Louisiana, where it all started for me. The whole journey started there, and I’m just honored to have the UFC on the same page and the state of Louisiana on the same page to make this work. I didn’t know if it was all going to come together, but it did.”

We spoke to Poirier ahead of his fight, and gave us his food spot recommendations in New Orleans.

“I know everyone is going to probably tell you Acme Oyster House, go right next door to Bourbon House, easier to get into, great food.

“Mother’s, it’s like cafeteria-style best jambalaya I’ve ever had in my life”
