LSU taught Charlotte a lesson in Baton Rouge on Wednesday. The 49ers women’s college basketball program foolishly poked the Bear Tiger on social media earlier in the week.

They lost by 58 points.

To say the college basketball game became personal would be an understatement. The No. 5-ranked team in the country picked up multiple technical fouls during the dominant victory.

LSU and Charlotte have women’s college basketball history, kind of.

This unexpected rivalry between two non-conference programs dates back to 2022. They do not have any direct ties.

Charlotte named Tomekia Reed as its new head coach in 2024. Reed previously coached at Jackson State. Jackson State gave LSU a legitimate scare during a six-point loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022. It was already personal for Kim Mulkey.

And then the 49ers players got involved. It started with this TikTok:

Those same athletes later doubled down:

Both videos were later deleted but it was too late. Mulkey said after the game that her team saw the videos as bulletin board material. Literally. They put up screenshots of the videos throughout the facility.

The Tigers were “fired up.”

Technical fouls galore!

LSU received multiple technical fouls throughout the game and it started early. The first one was called on Mikaylah Williams in the first quarter when she gestured to the Charlotte bench.

The second was called on true freshman Bella Hines for brandishing a weapon at the bench.

Grace Knox picked up the Tigers’ third technical foul after a vicious block in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers also picked up two technical fouls of their own for retaliatory behavior. They could not keep their frustration in tact as they went on to lose 117-59. Even their own players turned on each other.

Needless to say, LSU wanted to destroy Charlotte after the TikTok videos and did exactly that. However, despite some initial incorrect reporting, they still shook hands after the game.

Two TikTok videos and five technical fouls, the Bayou Bengals stay undefeated at 4-0 with a dominant win at home. As it would turn out, they did not play “some competition” after all.
