Maddyn Greenway is one of the top high school basketball players in the country. However, the five-star Kentucky Wildcats commit should’ve been called for a technical foul during her most recent game because of an untucked jersey.
The officials turned a blind eye to the minor rules infraction.
While this may not seem like a big deal, because it’s not, the rules of high school basketball are clear. Players must tuck in their jerseys to be eligible for competition.
Who is Maddyn Greenway?
You probably are not familiar with the Minnesota basketball phenom if you do not live in the North Star State or Kentucky but Maddyn Greenway is a name you need to know. She is a five-star recruit in the women’s college basketball recruiting Class of 2026 for a reason.
The 5-foot-8 point guard is considered one of the three-best players at her position and a top-10 player overall.
Greenway, who signed with Kentucky in November, held offers from Duke, Clemson, Iowa, Stanford and UCLA, but was always the Wildcats. She committed in 2024 and signed a year later— almost to the date.
There is a lot of hype around Greenway, who is the daughter of former NFL linebacker Chad Greenway.
She helped to lead the United States National Team to a gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Cup. Her high school career speaks for itself.
Maddyn Greenway started playing varsity as a seventh grader! This is her sixth and final year playing for Providence Academy in Plymouth, Minnesota and she is fast approaching the 5,000-point mark.
- 2020-21, 7th grade: 21.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.8 steals per game
- 2021-22, 8th grade: 23.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.5 steals per game

- 2024-25, junior: 32.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 4.8 steals per game
Greenway is currently averaging 33.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 8.2 assists and 6.2 steals per game during the first 16 games of her senior season. She dropped 47 points against Minnehaha on Saturday to come within five points of the 5,000-mark at 4,995 points in 169 varsity high school basketball games.
Jerseys must be tucked per Minnesota high school basketball rules.
To call a senior in high school on this kind of rules violation is petty and insignificant. I get it!
But the rules are the rules and I was not the first person to point it out.
Maddyn Greenway popped off for 47 points over the weekend. The defense simply did not have an answer.
As dominant as she was, Greenway played the majority of the game with her jersey untucked.
Minnesota high school basketball follows NFHS rules. Per NFHS Rule 3-5-5, jerseys that are designed to be tucked in must be tucked in. An untucked jersey prevents entry into the game. If an untucked jersey is noticed during play, a warning will be issued. A failure to tuck the jersey will lead to a technical foul.
The Minnesota State High School League also outlines the tucked jersey rule in its list of uniform requirements. A jersey must be tucked.
Greenway obviously did not have her jersey tucked during the blowout win over Minnehaha. Officials chose to turn a blind eye to the violation. Oh well. It did not have an impact on the final score.
